The aim of this project is to scan as many vintage
computer magazines and documents (books, manuals...) as possible, and transfer
them into an electronic document format such as Acrobat PDF. As the IT
industry advances in new directions, more and more of its roots are being
forgotten. A lot of
invaluable and high quality material is being
lost due to the age. The paper does not last forever, and it is not easy
to carry around, unlike the e-documents. The
e-documents also offer other advantages over
common paper beside weight and durability, namely the OCR, the Optical
Character Recognition possibility which allows you to do easy searches
within the documents, and transfer information without the need to copy
it down manually.
Most of the pages are scanned in black and white
as OCR does not work well with colour pages. Another drawback of colour
pages is that they take lots of space and usually take longer time to scan.
The final files would be huge, and the same would apply for the space required
for image processing. All the documents are being scanned at high resolution,
at 200 or 300 dpi. It would be pointless having small and basically unreadable
pictures just to be able to preserve the colour information, although colour
pages are inserted whenever possible. Some of the scanned documents include
a particularly difficult layout / colour scheme which makes it necessary
to use colour or greyscale images instead. In any case the aim is to achive
the best possible quality with a reasonably sized documents with as much
OCR as possible.
COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER |
Although most of the material
could be considered to be abandoned, either because the original publisher(s)
do not exist anymore, most of them still do and still detain rights on
the material. However, in many countries you have a right on personal backup
copy in case you own the original. These laws vary country by country.
Therefore please note that THIS PAGE IS ONLY
A DATABASE. DOCUMENTS ARE NOT DISTRIBUTED ON THIS PAGE. |

Want
to help? |
If you would like to help with the project, there
are several ways in which you can do it.
-
You can help by scanning the missing magazines or
manuals yourself. This is a very lenghty process which requires a lot of
practice and expertise in oreder to achieve the best results. If you need
some guidelines I would be more than happy to help you. Otherwise, you
can also scan the missing pages (if there are any) for existing magazines.
-
You can send me the magazines that I do not have,
and I will scan them as soon as I can.
-
You can help with magazine indexing. The aim is to
create a list of articles in each magazine available online. It is preferable
that you understand the language in which the magazine is printed.

Yes! Perhaps the most interesting one is the www.iltecnicorisponde.info,

wheter every page has been scanned and eventual defects. Since the scans
come from dated material it is possible that there are parts of pages or
complete pages missing. In the latter case it will be noted in the completeness
column. |

PDF file sizes. V5 indicats the more compact, Acrobat Reader V5+ compatible
